Improving Productivity with Hand Sanitizers?

Every year, companies across the country lose more than 63 billion dollars of productivity due to employee sickness. Work illnesses contribute to lost output, reduced worker efficiency, and man power shortfalls that account for the majority of the money lost due to worker illness and injury.

Throughout the fiscal year, workers on average take 8 annual sick days. Once regarded as a simple “cost of doing business” scenario, companies now have an option to fight unforeseen and avoidable staff sick time which ultimately drains the organization’s bottom line. This highly effective tool for fighting illness and keeping office productivity high is hand sanitizer. Surprisingly, merely installing and using a hand sanitizer dispenser on site can help save an organization billions of dollars a year.

By simply installing dispensers and enforcing a company policy on their use, the office can stay healthier and more productive throughout the year. A hand sanitizer dispenser at the entrance of the cafeteria, conference rooms, and any other high-traffic common area will help stop the spread of germs. Something as simple as a rinse free, nonalcoholic gel or foam can stop illnesses from spreading through an innocent handshake or cough.

Convenience is king when it comes to an effective office policy. Mounting a clearly visible and easily accessible hand sanitizer dispenser on the wall next to all main entrances and outside of bathrooms will help employees remember to use them often. Workers will quickly become accustomed to accessing a quick shot of hand sanitizer as they function throughout the day in various parts of the office. This practice will ultimately help prevent them from becoming infected with any sickness as well as help prohibit them from passing germs on to colleagues.

Communicable illnesses force companies to forfeit copious amounts of productivity annually. Due to the strain of the current economic climate, people tend to return to work before obtaining a completely clean bill of health, thus perpetrating a germ’s continuing lifecycle by passing it on to unsuspecting coworkers. Each cold working its way through the staff ranks makes it easy to recognize its effect on overall output.

Planning Your Company’s Future Move

Knowing how many people you employ now helps you estimate how much space you need today to operate your business comfortably, but building in your anticipated growth helps you expand your business without costly interruptions. As a company grows in size, relocation becomes a very large and complex undertaking, requiring input and coordination of construction, IT, finance, furniture vendors, engineering, and other teams and personnel. By waiting too long to start the process, a company could be limiting its options, rental rates could be higher, and the number of spaces available might be limited.

So if you currently employ 10 people therefore you can estimate you need approximately 2,500 square feet of office space today. (250 SF per person X 10 people= 2,500 SF). But, you expect to add 2 new employees each year and you want to sign a three-year lease. Do you need an additional 1,500 square feet today to accommodate your growth plans? Not necessarily. You need to determine what type of employees you will be adding. If they are senior executives that need private offices then, you will need to add closer to 1,800 square feet, (300 SF X 6 executives= 1,800 SF). But, if they are clerical support staff that will operate in a “bull pen” or open space plan then the need may be as low as 900 square feet, (150 SF x 6 employees = 900 SF) Spending time now estimating your employee growth plans could save you a significant amount of money in the future. Moving your offices mid-lease because you do not have enough space to add necessary staff can be much more expensive than building in your expected growth needs before you sign the lease.

The below table is a general guideline for how much time you should spend looking for new space for your company.

Space Size in SF Time Table
1,000 – 5,000 3-6 Months
5,001 – 10,000 4-9 Months
10,001 – 20,000 6-10 Months
20,001 – 50,000 8-15 Months
50,001 – 100,000 15-24 Months
100,001 + 24+ Months

Creating a Healthy Office Environment for your Business

There is no doubt want to make sure you and your employees enjoy a healthy, productive office environment. But what can you do to help your Boise Valley office space into one that inspires productivity and efficiency?

Your space should be one that motivates, but you also must provide an area for your employees to de-stress and decompress. Beautiful artwork, a large window or simply a quiet spot where employees can give their eyes and their minds a rest from the rigors of blaring computer screens and the phone ringing is a must for a healthy office environment.

Also, be aware of the lighting in your Boise Valley office space. Sure, you need plenty of task lighting to get the job done, but you also need to provide natural light in your space wherever you can. From writing at their desks to scanning the bookshelves, you need to ensure that task lighting is adequate to help prevent eye strain. However, all task lighting and no natural lighting can have a negative effect on the mood of your employees especially during the winter months so try to give them as much natural light as possible to calm and invigorate them and yourself.

Never underestimate the power of fresh air and plants. Stale office air does nothing for the health of your employees so add plants whenever possible. Plants not only provide fresh air to your office, but they are also pleasing to the eye. If you can find office space with accessible outdoor space, your employees will thank you for it.

Don’t overlook ergonomics when choosing or designing your office space. The health of your employees especially those who sit behind their desk for the better part of the day relies on their comfort. Do what you need to do in terms of ergonomically friendly desks, chairs, and computer accessories to ensure that their minds and bodies are comfortable and properly positioned throughout the day.
